Huguenot and Protestant clandestinity in Quebec City

Hidden musical heritage: Huguenot and Protestant worship underground

The Huguenot and Protestant faith is said to have survived discreetly in New France and after the Conquest. How did these communities live out their faith in the face of the dominant Catholicism? Did they adapt, convert or maintain clandestine practices?

Our program explores works associated with Huguenot and Protestant composers such as Goudimel, De Sermisy, Dowland and Handel.

This exploration of a musical heritage marked by discretion could offer insights into the identity of these communities. We question their probable practices, in line with historians’ growing interest for this under-documented chapter of our history.
